Preventive Senior Pet Care Prolongs Health & Increases Quality of Life

senior pet

Our ultimate goal for your senior pet is to prolong health and offer a pain free, comfortable quality of life.

Prevention and early detection of senior pet ailments

As your pet ages, the chances of developing life-threatening illnesses such as kidney failure or cardiac disease increase. Prevention and early detection of these conditions are imperative in extending the life of your beloved senior pet.  It is important to continually schedule your companion animal's biannual wellness exams. During these visits, your veterinarian will conduct comprehensive assessments and tests to ensure total health as your pet ages.

Senior pet weight control

Proper animal weight control decreases the rate at which your pet ages, as well as reduces susceptibility to serious diseases. Older dogs and cats experience a natural decline in activity and energy levels; diet should subsequently change to match your pet's age and energy.  Our veterinarians are happy to discuss food recommendations and regimes that best suit the individual needs of your furry friend.

Behavioral monitoring

Since behavioral changes in senior pets can indicate early signs of disease or other ailments, pet behavioral monitoring becomes increasingly important as your companion animal ages.  Contact us if your pet experiences any of the following:

  • Confusion
  • Decreased interaction with family members
  • Inconsistent sleeping pattern
  • Uncontrollable bowel movements
  • Stiffness
  • Lameness
  • Reluctance to climb steps or jump
  • Difficulty standing up
  • Increased water intake
  • Frequent urination
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite

Special Dental Needs

Pet dental problems can also increase with age.  Some signs and symptoms to be mindful of include:

  • Increased salivation
  • Bleeding
  • Redness or inflammation
  • Loss of appetite
